As you walk through the halls of Harris Hill Nursing Facility you can’t help but stop to smell the roses! After all, the building is adorned with brightly colored, sweet smelling posies both inside and out, thanks to employee Brent Shabacon and generous donations from local vendors.
Brent’s passion for gardening was cultivated at an early age by his grandmother and has continued throughout his life. He has participated in Buffalo in Bloom for 20 years, adopted a rose garden at Delaware Park and has worked to beautify the courtyard gardens at Harris Hill for several years. In addition, he often brings in bouquets of flowers from his own gardens for everyone to enjoy.
This spring, Brent took it upon himself to reach out to local nurseries and garden centers to see if they would be interested in donating flowers to the residents in the facility. The timing was especially perfect, as the flowers helped brighten the days of the residents quarantined due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“The response was wonderful,” Brent stated. “The Home Depot, Agle’s Farm Market, Dash’s and Trader Joe’s have all donated. In fact, Trader Joe’s calls weekly for me to pick up flowers! Everyone in the facility is so pleased to see the fresh arrangements.”
In addition to having flowers throughout the facility, residents have enjoyed making personal arrangements for their rooms during various activity programs. “Harris Hill is like my second home. I love the residents, and if the flowers bring them smiles and joy then it makes my day,” Brent stated.
Brent is certainly no stranger to bringing smiles to the residents’ faces! He’s held a number of positions throughout his 17 years of employment including starting his career as a trainee in the certified nursing assistant program. He has also worked in the activity department on the memory care unit and as a staffing coordinator. Whatever his role, it’s no secret that Brent tenderly cares for people just like he does his flower gardens. “Brent truly defines what it means to be a McGuire Mission Maker,” stated Danielle Reusch, RN, administrator. “He’s compassionate, dependable, courteous and informative and is an asset to our team.”
