Helen Koeppelle, a resident at The McGuire Group’s Garden Gate Health Care Facility in Cheektowaga, and her husband Carl of Cheektowaga celebrated their 70th anniversary at a party in their honor. They were married on June 5, 1948 and have been residents of Cheektowaga for more than 64 years.
The couple met when Helen was sitting on a bench with her girlfriends in front of Barth’s Tavern on Broadway and Carl started talking to her. Everyone in the neighborhood used to meet there. They dated for two years before marrying.
Helen worked at Stransky’s Hardware, Lampka Furniture C-Kitchen as a bookkeeper and secretary. Carl worked at Ernst Steel for 30 years and the University at Buffalo for 15 years. The couple enjoyed camping every weekend for 25 years and also belonged to a bowling league for 25 years. They used to take their daughters to a beach (one of Helen’s favorite places), a park or an activity nearly every weekend when the kids were young.
The couple has two children, Denise Godinez of Snyder and the late Renée Maurin. They also have 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Helen has been a resident at Garden Gate for more than a year. She enjoys attending exercise classes, listening to music and socializing with others. In the past, she enjoyed crocheting and reading and has always been known for her sweet and kind nature.
