The McGuire Group, operator of six nursing and rehabilitation facilities in New York State, announced that its Brookhaven Health Care Facility in East Patchogue was ranked 4th out of more than than 600 New York-based nursing facilities in Newsweek’s annual Best Nursing Homes ranking released this week. Its five other facilities include Garden Gate Health Care Facility in Cheektowaga ranking at 8; Seneca Health Care Center in West Seneca ranking at 19; Northgate Health Care Facility in North Tonawanda ranking at 28; Harris Hill Nursing Facility in Williamsville ranking at 31; and Autumn View Health Care Facility in Hamburg ranking at 38.
Newsweek and research firm Statista Inc. analyzed more than 15,000 nursing homes in the US based on population size and recognized high achievers in 20 states. In order to qualify for the study, each facility was required to have 150 beds or more and could not be part of a chain or group. In total, the state lists contain 406 unique nursing homes with New York having the most at 63 facilities.
A score was calculated for every nursing home based on weighted performance data including staffing, quality measures and health inspections which comprised 85-precent of the score and a reputation survey which comprised 15-percent.
Information for the report was taken from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, CMS, nursing home compare website which assigns an overall ranking of one to five stars based on a nursing home’s performance on three separate measures: health inspections, staffing, and quality measures. All three domains have their own star ratings from one to five stars. Better quality is indicated by more stars. Statista modified the CMS approach by redistributing the assignment of the underlying measures to a 10-point score instead of 5 stars to allow for a finer evaluation of a nursing home performance. In addition, an awarded nursing home was required to have achieved a minimum of 5 out of a maximum of 10 points in all three measures, so that only nursing homes that showed at least a satisfactory level of performance in all sub-areas were awarded. In addition, Statista and Newsweek invited 46,000 medical experts and others to an online peer-to-peer survey to obtain the reputation survey score.
The McGuire Group’s six facilities feature more than 1,100 beds. Services include 24-hour skilled nursing care, subacute and outpatient rehabilitation, memory care, palliative care, hospice services and respite/short-term care. The facilities continuously receive outstanding ratings from the federal government and have finished in the first quintile of New York State’s quality measures for 6 out of 6 years. The McGuire Group is the only multi-facility company in the state to have achieved this recognition.
